Overview

Courtside, in partnership with Witney Town Council and with major support from Sport England, is developing the Witney Padel Hub, a flagship multi-sport facility set to open in 2025. The project represents one of the most ambitious community sport and leisure developments in Oxfordshire, designed to serve people of all ages and create a true destination for sport, fitness, and wellbeing.

The Hub will feature a unique blend of facilities:

Facilities built

The UK’s first full-glass padel court supplied by Portico Sport (Spain).

Three new tennis courts.

A FIA-standard changing room facility, suitable for football teams from youth to adult.

A modern coffee shop, yoga room, and community meeting space.

A container-based temporary café, designed as a reusable structure for future projects.

Objectives

Deliver a state-of-the-art community sports facility accessible to all age groups.

Provide Witney Town with a landmark flagship development for Courtside.

Address local demand for padel, one of the UK’s fastest-growing sports, while enhancing existing football and tennis infrastructure.

Balance modern leisure amenities (coffee shop, yoga, meeting rooms) with practical community services.

Challenges

Site integration: The build had to accommodate and work around an existing skate park, splash park, and mini golf, ensuring access and utility connections for all.

Drainage issues: The site required a full attenuation drainage system, designed and implemented by consultants to resolve complex water management challenges.

Access and infrastructure: Ensuring reliable power, water, and toilet facilities while maintaining park access for other users.

Temporary café solution: To provide amenities before the permanent coffee shop is complete, a shipping container café was designed, converted, and installed—a structure that can be redeployed to other sites in future.

Specialist installation: Delivering the full-glass padel court required a heavy crane brought onto a sports field, a major logistical task that caused delays due to ground conditions.

Solutions

Expert consultants were brought in to design and implement the attenuation drainage system, ensuring long-term site sustainability.

A flexible container café was created and delivered within weeks, demonstrating innovation and adaptability.

Careful planning and phased works allowed the site to remain accessible to other community facilities throughout construction.

Collaboration between Courtside, Witney Town Council, and Portico Sport enabled the installation of the padel court despite significant logistical challenges.

Results & Outcomes

The first padel court in the UK with full glass sides, enhancing playability and spectator experience.

A community-first design, blending sport, leisure, and social amenities.

A flagship project for Courtside, complementing earlier developments such as their Sheffield facility.

Anticipated delivery by early 2025, after overcoming delays and site obstacles.
